Jephthah won a great victory over the Ammonites, but he had foolishly vowed to sacrifice the first thing that he saw coming out of his house if he was victorious. To fulfill this vow, Jephthah had to sacrifice his own daughter.<BR>The Ephraimites mobilized an army because they were angry at not being included in the battle against Ammon. They planned to attack Jephthah at his home in Gilead. Jephthah captured the shallows of the Jordan at the Jabbok River and killed the Ephraimites who tried to cross.<BR>For eighteen years the Ammonites oppressed the Israelite tribes on both sides of the Jordan River.
