Taken from Gethsemane, Jesus first appeared before the Jewish high council, which had convened at daybreak at Caiaphas' house. From there he went to Pilate, the Roman governor, then to Herod, tetrarch of Galilee, who was visiting in Jerusalem; and back to Pilate, who, in desperation, sentenced Jesus to die.
