The Sea of Galilee, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, was a focal point of much of Jesus' ministry. Of his 33 recorded miracles, at least 18 happened here. The sea is a large lake, with its surface 600 feet below sea level. The Jordan River flows into the north of the lake and exists at the south end. Fishing was the main industry during Jesus' time. The lake has had at least a dozen names, including the Lake of Gennesaret (Luke 5: 1), the Sea of Chinnereth (Numbers 34: 11), and Lake Tiberias. St. Peter's Church, a Franciscan church, was built on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in memory of the first miracle of fish.
