When the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the mother of the Messiah, God's Son, she left Nazareth to visit her cousin or aunt Elizabeth, who lived near Jerusalem. Since a woman would never travel alone, she likely joined a caravan headed there-- Luke 1: 39-56.
