Bible-time houses in Israel were usually made of stone or clay bricks. Roofs were wooden rafters covered by reeds of branches. Most houses had open windows since glass was not yet used for windows as today. Often significant activity was carried out on the flat, open rooftops, or in open courtyards. Water was drawn from an open well.
