Riding the threshing sled, or sledge, the farmer drives his oxen back and forth over the grain, grinding the husks and releasing the grain. This mixture will then be tossed into the air on a windy day, blowing the chaff away and leaving the grain, called winnowing. All of this work is done on a threshing floor.
