Hebron, also called Kirjath-Arba, appeared several times in the Bible. Here Sarah died and Abraham buried her in the Cave of Machpelah. Later, Jacob, Leah, Isaac, and Rebekah were also buried here. Today a large building known as Haram el-Khalil, sacred to the Arabs, stands over this cave. Later, David ruled over Judah for seven and a half years here before he became king of all Israel.
