Coahuiltecan Indians carried stones from a local quarry to build the church and mission walls.<BR>Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepcion was transferred to the San Antonio river in 1731. It became one of the five Franciscan missions in this area which together form the largest concentration of early missions in North America. The beautiful domed church was dedicated in 1755 and is the only San Antonio mission built with two towers. It looks very much like it did when completed except for its brightly painted facade which has long since faded.
