Exterior of outer wall. Raids from Apache and Comanche Indian tribes forced communities to retreat behind strong fortifications.<BR>Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo was founded on the San Antonio river in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesus. Known as the Queen of the Missions for its size and beauty, it became the best known of the five Franciscan missions in this area which together form the largest concentration of early missions in North America. San Jose was a major social center that can be viewed as a model of mission organization.
